In the spirit of Samuel Fischer, whose name the foundation proudly bears, it is dedicated to fostering further cultural – especially literary – exchange between European societies and to promote humanistic culture in the tradition of such eminent authors as Ilse Aichinger, Svetlana Alexievich, Ivo Andrić, Imre Kertész, and Thomas Mann.
Since 2003, within the framework of its cultural exchange programs, S. Fischer Stiftung has been supporting translators of contemporary German-language literature in the Ukraine, Belarus, Hungary, Poland, Russia, and Turkey. In 2008, the foundation was vital in establishing the private-public partnership that is the European network for literature and books Traduki. Since 2012, together with Deutsche Akademie für Sprache und Dichtung, the foundation has been organising the Debates on Europe series.
To promote research projects in the fields of literary and cultural history, the S. Fischer Foundation awards several Grants each year. In addition, the foundation, in cooperation with Freies Deutsches Hochstift Frankfurt and Goethe Universität Frankfurt, established the annual Monika Schoeller lectureship in literary translation.
The literary rights and estates of several authors, including Wolfgang Hilbig, Hubert Fichte, and Dieter Forte, as well as photographer Leonore Mau, are in the care of S. Fischer Stiftung.
